Sensation - targeted motor control : Every spike counts ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Traditionally, sensory processing and motor control have been studied separately, reflecting the belief that sensory and motor streams remain independent until linked via cortical “associative” areas. Although this belief no longer dominates neuroscience, the traditional tendency to continue to study sensory processing and motor control separately is not easily overcome. Only after closely examining operation of sensory organs does one realize how important motor control is for sensation. The elegant study of Herfst and Brecht (2008) reveals how accurate sensation-targeted motor control should be in one such system the vibrissal system.

متن کاملMillisecond-Scale Motor Encoding in a Cortical Vocal Area
Studies of motor control have almost universally examined firing rates to investigate how the brain shapes behavior. In principle, however, neurons could encode information through the precise temporal patterning of their spike trains as well as (or instead of) through their firing rates. Although the importance of spike timing has been demonstrated in sensory systems, it is largely unknown whe...
متن کاملExcess synchrony in motor cortical neurons provides redundant direction information with that from coarse temporal measures.
Previous studies have shown that measures of fine temporal correlation, such as synchronous spikes, across responses of motor cortical neurons carries more directional information than that predicted from statistically independent neurons. It is also known, however, that the coarse temporal measures of responses, such as spike count, are not independent. We therefore examined whether the inform...
متن کاملSums of Spike Waveform Features for Motor Decoding
Traditionally, the key step before decoding motor intentions from cortical recordings is spike sorting, the process of identifying which neuron was responsible for an action potential. Recently, researchers have started investigating approaches to decoding which omit the spike sorting step, by directly using information about action potentials' waveform shapes in the decoder, though this approa...
متن کاملSensory and Motor Systems The Neural Code for Motor Control in the Cerebellum and Oculomotor Brainstem†‡
Spike trains are rich in information that can be extracted to guide behaviors at millisecond time resolution or across longer time intervals. In sensory systems, the information usually is defined with respect to the stimulus. Especially in motor systems, however, it is equally critical to understand how spike trains predict behavior. Thus, our goal was to compare systematically spike trains in...
